Setting up your own company
Hugo, Director of a London based Financial Service Search and Selection Firm
Having worked for a number of years within the industry and proving his ability and business acumen Hugo was hand-picked to set up his own company. Under his steerage, his firm has blossomed into one of London’s top search and selection firms for the financial markets. He is the archetypal consummate professional and a role model for many budding young Consultants. We maintain a very close relationship with Hugo and he remains one of our most trusted clients.
A Fast-track to Management
Dane, Manager at an International Technology Recruiter
A graduate of the University of Leeds, Dane came through our doors in the latter part of 2010. Danes’s excellence was soon identified and it was only a matter of months before he was managing his own team. Managing a team is not the sort of skill that comes easily to a lot of consultants as they tend to prioritise making lots of money! Being able to balance your own books as well as cultivating a successful team is a rare skill, let alone for someone who is relatively new to the industry. We couldn’t have asked for a better representative.
An Alternative Career Path
Stephanie, Client Relationship Manager at a Leading Financial Services Headhunting Firm
Having studied Hispanic and Latin American Studies at Leeds University, Stephanie was looking for a career where she could use her language skills in a challenging environment. She started working in Aerospace Engineering recruitment, where a large proportion of her clients were based across Europe and Asia.
“I progressed from a Resourcer to a Consultant within my first 6 months, and became an Account Manager within the next 6 months. I was then headhunted into another organisation, and after a year I was managing my own area and my own team. I was looking for the next step, and subsequently joined my current company as Client Development Manager, which I am enjoying immensely.”
We asked Stephanie whether she had got involved in the social side of things:
“I have attended a lot of events with my clients such as Wimbledon and ATP Tennis, the Races, Polo, Rugby and an infinite number of lunches, dinners and evenings out. I have also travelled extensively for my job, and visited clients across Europe and USA.”
Working Internationally
Julian, Senior Associate at a Leading Commodities Search Firm in Hong Kong
Back in September of 2008 Spencer Harrington helped Julian to find a brand new path in life. Having graduated from the University of Newcastle in 2005, Julian found himself straight at home in the Recruitment world so much so that was able to take a faith of leap and emigrate to Hong Kong. He is now a senior Associate at a market-leading commodities search firm, working the Oil and Energy Markets to high specifications. Julian’s story proves that the Recruitment Industry is full of opportunities and can open the door to the wider world
Social Monster
Jon, Healtchcare Recruitment Consultant, London
Having graduated in 2009 from the University of Leeds, Jon Page starred in a BBC Radio 4 documentary following the fate of post recession graduate job seekers. It was somewhat indicative of the buoyant recruitment industry that Jon should be the first to find employment among his peer group. He is now earning an above average income for his age group and has defied the national post graduate trend. Since his arrival at Harbor Recruitment he has become an integral part of the team and forged many friendships. Not only is he an active member of the company’s social scene, playing in the quarterly cross divisional football tournament, he has also taken on the baton of organising and taking part in the company’s recent Three Peaks Challenge.
“My Biggest achievement was completing the 3 peaks challenge with some colleagues at the Palmarium Group, raising over £2000 together for a great cause. My greatest challenge was to join a start up company in a niche sector and carve out my own business against strong competitors who charge less than us.
My overall experience has been one of both hard work and great reward. It’s a great feeling at the end of the week when you’ve hit the phones hard to relax in the pub and get in the socialising you don’t always have time for in the office. This is even truer on the back of hard won successes and big commissions!
The key thing is that money is a great motivator but it is hard work and you have to crave every little success to make it work in a big way.” JP, 2011
