So you’re already thinking about your career post-university? If you think recruitment or sales could be for you there is lots that you can be doing now to help in your future job search.
You’re going to be one of around 600,000 people graduating from university in 2011 so you need to STAND OUT. There are lots of things that you can be doing now that will prove to your future employers that you have got what it takes to be a hugely successful sales professional or recruitment consultant.
Get some work experience
Proving to your prospective employer that you can cut it in the working world is essential and there will be lots of opportunities around campus for you to get some work experience.
• Sales – Not only can you earn a little extra cash to spend on books (or at the union bar) you’ll also learn what it’s like to work in that competitive, reward driven environment and prove to your future employer that you’ve got what it takes to succeed in sales.
• Internships – there are a huge number of companies that will take summer interns and it’s great experience. If you have a particular interest in finance or IT then start speaking to firms asap and offer your services.
• Commercial Experience – exposure to a commercial environment will really help you show you are going to be able to cope working in the working world. Office jobs in your summer or part-time work during term-time will teach you a lot about the working world.
• Part-time Work – will also help improve your CV and make you more attractive to your prospective employers; be it bar-work, promotional work or hairdressing!
Get Competitive
You’ll need to show that you’ve got a competitive streak, obviously being on your 1st XV rugby team helps, but there are lots of other ways that don’t involve running around on a field if that’s not your thing.
Show that you have fought for success at work or in academics, won a place on a social committee or nabbed a hard-to-get job on campus. Showing you’ve had to work hard for something will demonstrate your drive for success.
Get Involved
To demonstrate your self-confidence and sociability get involved in campus life.
Volunteer on the committee of your sports team or join some unusual societies, it’ll look great on your CV and you’ll probably end up having a lot of fun.
Keep Your Head Down
Your CV can be full of sporting, social and commercial achievements but without a strong academic record it counts for little.
Keep your head in your books and make sure you come out with a 2.1/best grade possible to show you’re able to balance prowess in the classroom as well as on the dance floor!
Keep Your Eyes and Ears Open
Knowing what’s going on in the world will really help when it comes to starting your interview processes
Try to read the paper as often as you can and keep a finger on the recruitment and sales pulse. Whenever you read a story relevant to rec or sales, or the industry you’re particularly interested in working with then cut it out and keep hold of it. Showing that you’ve done your research and are committed to starting a career in this industry will speak volumes.
